In July 2019 the Rotary Club of Truckee, under Dianne’s leadership, was awarded a District 5190 Service Grant of $2,000. The club matched the grant for a total of $4,000, which purchased 2,000 books and book bags to be given to preschoolers each month through the Rotary Shares Stories program. Prez Says - May 2019Now that we are in the final quarter of Rotary year 2018-19, I reflect on all the events our Club has tackled, and want to express my sincere appreciation to every Rotarian whose efforts made those events a success. In the last three months, I have had the honor of inducting four new members into our Club. During the “information” session prior to induction of these individuals, your Membership Chair, Wes Beyer really drove home the key to being a great Rotarian boils down to 3 things. 1. Participation 2. Participation and 3. Participation. If Rotary was removed from our community, the huge void would be difficult, in fact, highly improbable to fill! Let’s continue to “Be The Inspiration” for the remainder of this Rotary year and keep the momentum charging forward as Meg Uri Rab steps in as your President on June 20th, 2019. |

Rotarians at Work Day. April 29, 2017On April 29th, the Rotary Club of Truckee participated in two community projects. One project was for a district grant with Truckee Sunrise, Tahoe City, Tahoe-Incline and Incline Village to install camera for Tahoe Alert. Each club had two representatives. Allan and Shirley Marshall represented the Rotary Club of Truckee. Looks like they had an amazing view. The second project was painting of the cart building at Ponderosa Golf Course. This building was in dire need of some fresh paint. It is amazing how fun and easy a project can be when you have so many helping hands: Sara, Curtis, Canyon & Ace Dube; Kelly and Sharlet Turner; Brent Collinson; Kathleen Eagan; Zach Fretz; Jason Hansford; Mike Horn; Randy House; Art King; Bill Quesnel; Laura and Mike Ryan; Stacy and Madison Stahl and John Wolfe. With these two projects, we contributed to the community and enjoy some fellowship. Thank you everyone for your help and participation, Jason |

Rotary Club of Truckee recognizes Grant Kaye a Paul Harris Fellow awardGRANT KAYE Grant Kaye has spent the last twelve years giving back to this community. He may not be the most visible contributor, but he’s always there, behind the scenes and working tirelessly. Grant is one of the founding members of Truckee’s new makerspace Truckee Roundhouse. He has had a vision of bringing a makerspace to this community for over five years and has finally been able to help make it happen. He’s worked non-stop for over two years to get the space open to the community. As a board member, treasurer, wood shop lead, teacher, and much more, Grant is arguably the driving force behind this project and the community is lucky to have him as part of it. As a professional photographer, Grant also donates his time and photos to a number of different non-profit fundraisers. He has donated photography classes that have gone for up to $2000.00 and is always willing to contribute time and/or artwork to those that ask. Grant is also on the board of the McConkey Foundation. Every year he spends over a month of his time helping to prepare for the McConkey Gala. From building sets to acquiring auction items to offering his DJing talents, Grant steps up and does whatever is needed to ensure a successful event. Grant has been involved in the Burning Man art world for years and has been instrumental in a number of Burning Man projects including Electric Lady Land, The Ship, Embrace and the Space Whales. His design capabilities, expertise in building, effective management style, and willingness to see a project through has made him a valued contributor to the events art community. Grant embodies the phrase ‘Service Above Self’ – he is an outstanding example of the positive impact one person can have on a community. |

Remembering Bob SuttonRobert E. Sutton March 20, 2017 1925 - 2017 Robert Ellsworth Sutton "Bob", 91, a longtime resident of Truckee, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2017 after a brief illness. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia Smith Sutton "Pat", a longtime local elected official; his parents Don and Opal Sutton; and his oldest brother Charles (Billie Jo, deceased). He is survived by his elder brother Don (Marilyn, deceased). Bob was the dedicated father to four children: Robert Jr., Keith (Anna), Paula, and Eric (Mary). He was grandfather to Keith and Anna's son Aaron, grandfather to Eric and Mary's children Matthew and Mark Lundbeck, and great-grandfather to Mark's children Rio and Athena. Bob is survived by Sutton family nieces and nephews, as well as the large extended Smith family via Pat who brought him seven siblings-in-law and their families. Bob's parents were born in Indiana and he is survived by relatives there. He also was longtime friends with the Jack and Bonnie Houlgate family. Bob was born in Bakersfield, CA on August 3, 1925. After he graduated from high school in 1943, Bob joined the Navy and was accepted into the V-12 Navy College Training Program which was designed to increase the number of commissioned officers to meet the demands of World War II. He enrolled in an accelerated academic program at the University of Texas at Austin and received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1945. Subsequently, he was a LTJG assigned to a LSM, an amphibious landing ship. After his military service, Bob received a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. He then went to work for Clements Construction Company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and made his first trip to Truckee in 1949 where he was the Superintendent responsible for paving the Brockway Shortcut, now Highway 267. Subsequently, he met his wife Pat whom he married in 1951 and settled in Fremont, CA. Bob kept close ties to the Truckee area and in 1962, he was honored to be a passenger in Jack Houlgate's Cessna 195 N9830A, the first plane to land at the Truckee Tahoe Airport. The Sutton family moved to Truckee in 1963 when Bob was assigned as Assistant Superintendent at the 24 hour a day Clements Rock Products plant that supplied material for the construction of Interstate 80 over Donner Summit. The family loved the Truckee area, so once I80 was built they decided to stay on and started the first asphalt paving business in the area – Robert E. Sutton Company. During that time, Bob became a registered Professional Engineer. Bob also worked several winter seasons as a Civil Engineer Augmentee to assist FHWA and FEMA after the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the 1997 California floods. After 45 years as CEO, he retired in 2010 and passed the family business to his son Eric. One of Bob's core values was service above self. He served his country and his community. He was a Shriner, Mason, Lion, and Charter Member of the Truckee Rotary Club. The Rotary Club honored him as a Paul Harris Fellow several times. Many years ago, Bob initiated the Rotary Ice Cream Booth at the Nevada County Fair and the Bud Fish Christmas Tree Lighting event in downtown Truckee, and both continue to this day. Bob also donated his equipment, crew, and expertise for the paving of Phase 1 of the Truckee River Legacy Trail. Earlier, both Bob and Pat were part of a citizens group that helped acquire the westend beach at Donner Lake and successfully gain support for a community swimming pool for the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District. Bob had a tremendous life. He was kind, had a great sense of humor, and knew how to have a good time. He made sure his family had the opportunity to ski by providing season passes at either Sugar Bowl or Squaw Valley. He and Pat worked with an architect to design their house to include a "Ski Room". They enjoyed taking the family on local excursions, and camping trips to various places including Nevada, Death Valley, Yosemite, Williams Grove, Meadow Lake, Mexico, and British Columbia. Visits to museums, missions, ghost towns, historic mines, archaeological and palaeontological sites, and natural settings were fascinating educational experiences to all. Bob was famous for his Uncle Bob's sourdough pancakes and omelets, Joe's Special, Auntie Bert's Enchiladee, and grilling on the BBQ. He was an avid skier, golfer, and tennis player in his earlier years, and he played cribbage until recently. Bob had an active life as a retiree. He enjoyed family get-togethers; holiday and birthday celebrations; Rotary events; trips to Indiana to see relatives, trace his heritage, and go to the Indy 500; as well as excursions around California to visit friends, attend family reunions, and go to Stanford football games and tailgate parties. Bob and Pat were devoted members of the Squaw Valley Chapel, United Church of Christ since the early 1960s. Bob was grateful for his relatives, friends from the Tahoe Truckee area and beyond, employees, and his caregivers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be announced this spring. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pat Sutton Memorial Scholarship Fund administered by the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation http://www.ttcf.net/supportscholarships/ (http://www.ttcf.net/supportscholarships/).

Senior Thanksgiving LuncheonAs the president of the club there are moments that fill me with pride and joy. Yesterday was one of those. It was fantastic to see multiple generations of community members gathered under one roof to celebrate Thanksgiving. Through the Club's fines, we were able to raise $640 for the seniors. This year, these dollars will have a direct impact to residents of the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments.
Yesterday, I was approached by Jesse, aka Clarence, who had a special request. Clarence asked if there was a way that Rotary would be able to provide gift cards for food at Safeway so they could have tri-tip steak for this year's holiday diner. Clarence informed me that the residents of the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments live on an average of $850/mo. and that items like meat are rarely part of their menu. Clarence has arranged for the Ritz Carlton staff to come to the complex and prepare an elaborate meal for the residents. At the end of yesterday's meeting, I asked Clarence how much she thought she would need to for the dinner and she said $400 would be plenty. I said we would be happy to do this. Art was able to deliver the Safeway gift card to her apartment. Clarence sent me this email last night,
Jason, how do I thank you...you have no idea what those gift cards mean to make this holiday season .. I am so humbled by what you did today...wow talk about being surprised...again thank you.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and I wanted you all to know that you have made Clarence very happy.
Sincerely,
Jason

Rotary Fellowship HikeROTARY CARPENTER VALLEY HIKE
Under the arch of a stunning fall afternoon, 20 lucky souls walked through the Carpenter Valley gate and onto the land set to be purchased by the Truckee Donner Land Trust. This valley, which is privately owned, has been off limits to the public for over a century. It is relatively untouched and presents an inspiring example of the beautiful landscapes we are blessed to have close at hand…mountain meadows, glistening streams and abundant flora.
If you were unable to join in this hike, we’ll check the Land Trust’s calendar next year and see if we can participate in another docent led tour.

Uganda Nursing SchoolJames Conley is heading up this operation.
Hi All, As I reported today, the Board voted on Tuesday to support the international humanitarian project of The Uganda Nursing School, Bwindi. This project is being developed by Dr. Scott Kellerman of the Nevada City 49er Club and the Reno Monday Noon Club. The purpose of the project is to help change the lives of the indigenous people of Southwestern Uganda in Kanungu district near the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. One of the oldest tribal groups in Africa, the Batwa Pygmies, were evicted from their ancestral home in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in 1992 by the Ugandan government to preserve the forest habitat for the Critically Endangered Mountain Gorilla. Of the total 600 Silverback Gorillas in Africa, 350 are located in Southwest Uganda in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. These beautiful creatures continue to live a somewhat endangered life in the forest preserve but are no less challenged in their own way than the Batwa.

Rotary Involvement is FUN![]()
Hello Rotarians,
If you were at lunch today you heard our District Governor talk about the Ignite program and having FUN. Ignite focuses on membership growth and retention. Since our club is already large we will be focusing on the retention and FUN part. I would like to invite all members of the club to consider joining our committee and help ignite the FUN! We will be discussing how to get every member involved in Ignite and what fun things we can do to retain and attract members. Whether it is new member mixers, beach picnics, snowmobile tours, river rating trips, Strategic Planning Meetings, hiking, boating , skiing, and whatever else the committee can plan and organize it will be FUN!!!! We are going to have our first membership committee meeting Thursday 8/2 at 11 am before our lunch meeting in the Rec center. Normally the membership committee meets the last Thursday of every month at 11 am before lunch in the rec center. I will be out of town the last Thursday of this month so that is why we are having it 8/2 this time. Our current membership committee consists of Bob Bell, Ron Wulff, John Pruyn, Brian Marsh, Cliff Hartwell, Mitch Clarin, Andrew Cross, Brinn Talbot, Wes Beyer, Marcia Beals, and myself. Please join us if you are interested in helping plan all the fun! If you can't make the 8/2 meeting and want to be involved, send me an email and let me know. Historic Moments in RotaryEach January, as Rotary district governors-elect convene at the International Assembly for training and fellowship, they can be certain of two things: a lot of take-home reading and the announcement of a new RI theme. The tradition of crafting a theme is credited to 1949-50 RI President Percy C. Hodgson, who outlined a list of four objectives for his term in office. Among them were the better application of the principles of vocational service and dedication to world understanding and peace through international service programs. Though Hodgson's 83-word proclamation ran substantially longer than today's shorter, punchier themes, Rotarians' desire to celebrate and support their president's annual program of service has remained the same. Other early themes include Rotary Is Hope in Action (Joaquin Serratosa Cibils, 1953-54), Kindle the Spark Within (Nitish C. Laharry, 1962-63), and Good Will Begins with You (Ernst G. Breitholtz, 1971-72). In the decades that followed, RI presidents introduced theme logos, lapel pins, ties, and scarves. Theme ties were introduced in the 1990s, and are now given out yearly. Many have incorporated the theme for the year. The first scarves showing the RI theme were designed by 1998-99 RI President James L. Lacy and his wife, Claudine, Follow Your Rotary Dream. |
